This honors seminar centers around a close reading of Ferdowsi’s Book of Kings, an epic history of ancient Iran, in English translation. We will examine the main themes of the work, including the role of fate, the nature of the demonic, and the complexities of kingship. More broadly, we will use the case of the Book of Kings to examine how literary works construct and represent the mythic and historical past, and the (shifting) role they play in the formation of group and national identities.
