The course introduces and weaves together principles of writing and principles of mindfulness, both of which are areas of expertise for the instructor. The course introduces students to several foundational practices of mindfulness that help develop focused attention in the present moment, such as focusing on the breath, understanding connections between mind and body, exercising self-compassion and gratitude, and working with challenging emotions. Throughout the course, students will also engage in various genres of writing (such as reflective, creative, and observational) that support the development of mindfulness practices. As part of the reflective component of the course, we will discuss and consider potential connections for exercising mindfulness through writing in academic, personal, and professional contexts. Students will read work by scholars such as Konda Mason, Eckhart Tolle, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Tara Brach, Jack Kornfield, Paula Muir, Robert Yagelski, and Kathleen Blake Yancey.
