The University Of Arizona's 'Children's Postinfectious Autoimmune Encephalopathy' (CPAE) Center is a multidisciplinary clinic specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS). PANS and PANDAS are two related disorders that result from an incorrect immune response that results in inflammation in the brain. As a result, patients experience varying symptoms, such as OCD, restrictive eating, anxiety, tics, cognitive regression, and more. As a multidisciplinary clinic, the clinic is comprised of a developmental and behavioral pediatrician, an immunologist, a neurologist, a behavioral psychologist and a psychiatrist, who all work in tandem to see patients in a single visit.
Interns will attend a once-weekly clinic, where they will assist in administering a 'Physical and Neurological Examination for Soft Signs' (PANESS). The PANESS is comprised of a series of movement related tasks that focus on dexterity and coordination, the results of which provide a clear sense of subtle neurological abnormalities that are oftentimes missed on a typical physical examination. The exam takes about 15 minutes and requires careful observation, documentation, and scoring that our physicians then use in their diagnosis and treatment. Once they complete all assigned PANESS tests during each clinic visit, interns will then shadow in the room of the last patient to observe how each specialty approaches care for this population.

The intern will work directly with the Quality Improvement and Population Health Coordinator, Medical Directors of the Alvernon, South Campus, and Mobile Health clinics, clinical faculty, residents, nursing, and support staff on one or more projects to improve health outcomes for patients. Projects may be population specific, for example patients with poorly controlled diabetes, women eligible for cervical cancer screening, pediatric patients, or other populations based on clinical needs and the interests of the intern. Goals of the project will be to improve access to care and utilization of clinical services, to increase patient health education, or enhance education of and utilization of preventive services (cancer screenings, vaccinations).

Social determinants of health, diabetes education, weight loss (patient interaction and/or research). Projects can be tailored to student's interests. Activities can involve interactions with patients in a clinical setting and/or research on health outcomes. Students in the past have worked on weight loss for adult diabetics and fall risk prevention for older adults. Internship includes shadowing physicians.

Description:
Established by the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in Tucson in 2006, the Medication Management Center (MMC) is a call center with board-certified pharmacists, pharmacy residents, student pharmacists, certified pharmacy technicians, nurses and nursing students who work together as an expert team in complex and chronic disease state management. They advise patients and their physicians on ways to achieve the best outcomes from drug therapy.
The internship introduces students to the field of medication therapy management (MTM), interprofessional collaboration, and managed care pharmacy. Students are given the opportunity to shadow several programs the MMC delivers, such as transitions of care, MTM, opioid case management, and many others, and to learn more about the role of the pharmacy profession.

Native or fluent Spanish speakers only. The MHP targets low-income, uninsured pregnant women and infants, children, teens, and adults living in medically underserved areas in Tucson, South Tucson, and unincorporated Pima County. Internship involves participating in clinical care and diabetes outreach to underserved populations. Current clinic sites are focused on three particular groups: (1) schools with high populations of low-income students; (2) community resource centers providing much-needed services to individuals; and (3) churches in low-income areas that act as congregation points. Clinical care is provided by two Nurse Practitioners and two Physicians, supported by a Medical Assistant, Clinic Driver, and a Community Health Educator.

Description:
Casa Paloma Shelter is an outreach center that provides a mailing address, telephone use, bathrooms & free toiletries and meds to homeless individuals in need. The three main areas interns are needed are the Hygiene Station, Mail Station and Food boxes. Casa Paloma is a program that helps unaccompanied homeless women. The program includes a drop-in center for women and transitional housing. Services include case management, referrals, showers and clothing, hot meals and sack lunches. Interns are needed for making lunches and organizing projects.

Pueblo has developed highly innovative programs for addressing the many challenging issues facing their student population which include, family conflict, incarceration, deportation of family members, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, drug addiction, food insecurity, and homelessness.
