Course Title: The Legacy of Enslavement in America: The Montgomery, AL Experience HNRS 295-002 

The 3-unit course, offered Spring 2027, includes a 5-day trip to Montgomery, Alabama, where students have an opportunity to visit historic sites and deepen their understanding of the impact of enslavement on the civil rights movement now and in the past.

Discover how myth and place shape who we are. On this Honors study abroad in Greece, you’ll explore contemporary reimaginings of ancient myths through the landscapes that inspired them—from bustling Athens to the islands. Through writing, reflection, conversations with locals, and immersive site visits, you’ll engage personally, creatively, and critically with themes of identity, belonging, migration, transformation, and resilience—deepening your understanding of how story, self, and environment shape one another.

Students will earn 6 Honors credits on this program.

  • PAH 393: Global MedCats (3 units)*
    *This class will count as the humanities elective for Health and Human Values minor
  • HNRS 395M: Special Topics in Health and Human Values (3 units)*
    *Required course for Health and Human Values honors minor

Additionally, students will take a required spring seminar course.

  • HNRS 195J: Special Topics in Humanities - Study Abroad Seminar (1 unit)

Courses will fulfill requirements for the Health and Human Values Minor.

Global Medcats: Portugal—a premier collaboration with the W.A. Franke Honors College—combines high-impact clinical experience with rich cultural immersion in vibrant Lisbon!

For five incredible weeks, you’ll step directly into European medical settings, shadowing local physicians for 20–25 hours each week. But this program goes far beyond traditional shadowing. Guided in-country by Honors faculty, you'll gain hands-on instruction and critical insight into a healthcare system world-renowned for its progressive public health initiatives. Through a blend of hospital observations, historical field trips, and ethnographic reflection, you will decode the complex connection between social context and modern medicine.

What You’ll Learn & Experience
 
  • Clinical & Cross-Cultural Engagement: Shadow European doctors in real-time while analyzing how social, structural, and political dynamics shape Lisbon’s healthcare structures.
  • Progressive Public Health in Action: Assess Portugal’s groundbreaking policies over the last two decades—including its landmark drug decriminalization, harm prevention strategies, and universal healthcare access.
  • Cultural Dimensions of Wellness: Explore how the local Portuguese environment and culinary traditions shape holistic views of community health and well-being.
  • Deep Metacognitive Growth: Practice "thinking about your thinking" through guided walks, community organization visits, and self-reflexive coursework that connects hospital room realities to the wider world.

Join Cielo this winter break for an unforgettable journey that takes you beyond the traditional classroom into the heart of Costa Rica. Through hands-on service learning projects, you’ll work alongside local communities, learn from Indigenous leaders, and explore the country’s rich biodiversity and conservation efforts.

Want to study abroad but worried about cost? Great news! We have multiple scholarships to help support your goals. Applicants who are accepted to the summer Greece trip or winter Costa Rica trip will automatically receive a $1,500 scholarship to help cover the cost of the trip.
