Contrary to common assumptions, many medieval women enjoyed an elevated status, could be active as artists and writers, and often assumed critically important political positions. This course will examine a selection of literary texts written by female writers, such as Hrotsvit of Gandersheim (10th c.),Marie de France (12th c.), and Christine de Pizan (15th c.), concluding with Helene Kottannerin (15th c.). This will help students understand the historical construction of modern notions about the history of gender and open their eyes to a significant literary discourse by female writers.
