Italian Renaissance. French Romanticism. Mexican Revolution. How do art, anatomy, and culture converge during different historical periods to configure the body? Consider the Italian Renaissance—and more particularly, the anatomical studies so crucial to the art of Leonardo da Vinci. How does Leonardo uphold the classical view of anatomy? How does he challenge it? Next: Do developments in science and philosophy during The Enlightenment contribute to the flowering of French Romanticism? Is this evident in anatomical art? Then: How do artists radicalize conceptions of the body following the Mexican Revolution? This course explores the nexus of art, science, and culture across historical periods to explore our ongoing awareness of human anatomy.
