W.A. Franke Honors College Students to host Agave Knowledge Exchange Event
The W.A. Franke Honors College will be collaborating with Tucson’s annual Agave Heritage Festival (AHF) to host an Agave Knowledge Exchange exhibition on April 20th in downtown Tucson. The Agave Heritage Festival is a four-day celebration that focuses on the agave plant and its cultural significance across borders.
Students in Franke Honors courses HNRS 335: Leadership: Building and Nourishing a Community and HNRS 314: Ideas Into Action, will be developing the Agave Knowledge Exchange in partnership with AHF and The Next Generation of Sonoran Desert Researchers and Professional (N-Gen). These interdisciplinary courses, taught by Drs. Nadia Alvarez Mexia and Caitlyn Hall respectively, are centered on service learning and building leadership in the Tucson community. The opportunity for students to engage in community research and events such as the Agave Heritage Festival is a part of the W.A. Franke Honors College’s commitment to service learning, which empowers students to collaborate with leaders and members of the Tucson community to present real research and propel social change.
"By partnering with community leaders and participating in events like the Agave Heritage Festival, students not only gain practical experience but also cultivate empathy, leadership, and a deep-seated commitment to effecting positive change in the world around them," said Dr. Caitlyn Hall, who teaches HNRS 314: Ideas Into Action.
The Agave Knowledge Exchange will showcase students’ community research and stories regarding themes of Environmental Sustainability, Gender Equity and Leadership, and Community Development in relation to the holistic agave ecosystem—encompassing the plant, processes, people and product. The Knowledge Exchange will be free and open to the public, occurring in advance of the Agave Fiesta, AHF’s signature celebration which will showcase all things agave, and include live music, food, art and more.
Along with hosting the knowledge exchange event, students will also be supporting various other Agave Fiesta events including seminars, Agave pit roasting, and world class culinary events.
