HEALTH CARE
FUTURES
The Health and Human Values (HHV) program prepares students for careers in healthcare by exploring the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of health and care.
By hosting an HHV intern, your organization helps shape tomorrow’s healthcare professionals. These students bring fresh energy, a curiosity about systems and care, and a deep commitment to equity and interdisciplinary learning. In return, you gain a thoughtful contributor who’s eager to understand your mission, assist with meaningful work, and reflect critically on healthcare in practice. It’s not just an internship – it’s a chance to invest in the future of compassionate, socially aware care.
Voices from Our Partners
Past internship sponsors found the experience deeply rewarding—for their teams, clients, and mission. Their insights say it best. We think you’ll see the value too.
HHV students are universally fabulous! Always there to help without being asked, always offering, and demonstrate willingness, openness and so much patience! Thank you for sharing them with me! Julie Feldman, director of Life Skills Training and Enhancement Program (LifeSTEP)
The students from HHV come with a unique interest in patient-healthcare provider relations and a good theoretical understanding of barriers to care, issues that were foreign to me as a medical student. HHV students have been very motivated to explore these issues further in my practice, with conclusions that at times were wonderfully surprising. The internship is not about fulfilling a passive role but an active engagement of being curious, and being ready to act on the curiosity. Alexander Zwart, MD from Tucson Endocrine Associates
Basic Internship Structure and Preparation
HHV students enter their internships with a strong academic foundation, having completed a core course that introduces key concepts from anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and history—all through the lens of health and care.
Internships typically span a full semester, with students committing 6–9 hours per week onsite. Each placement is designed to offer a mix of direct service, project-based work, and exposure to organizational operations. Students are eager to contribute meaningfully while learning how your team navigates the complexities of healthcare delivery.
Throughout the internship, they also participate in a companion course that includes weekly reflections, presentations, and an oral history interview with a long-standing staff member—deepening their understanding of your organization’s mission and values.
