This 1-credit course will introduce the types of skills that undergraduate students interested in conducting research should be aware of and the resources available at BIO5. The central goal is to provide actionable working knowledge of key skills expected of research professionals. The course is structured in three blocks spanning communication skills, core research skills, and types of support and individual labs available in the BIO5 community. Students will produce a “Skills Notebook” that is intended to be unique to each student based on a combination of skills applicable across a range of laboratories and those that are specific to the student’s research interests. We will also discuss and implement the process of hypothesis generation and conduct a group experiment to familiarize ourselves with the process of doing science and working with specialized laboratory equipment.
