If you’re graduating in May 2023 or later and are interested in a 15-month research position with one of the 13 UArizona Beckman Mentors which will give you a sizeable stipend, opportunities to present your work, and the privilege of serving your peers as a leader within UBRP, read on to learn more about the UArizona Beckman Scholars Program. Applications are due Friday, February 25th, 2022, at 3 PM.

About the UArizona Beckman Scholars Program:
The UArizona Beckman Scholars Program, funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, helps stimulate, encourage, and support research activities by exceptionally talented, full-time undergraduate students who are pursuing their studies at accredited four-year colleges and universities in the United States. The program is a prestigious one, typically providing a total student stipend of $18,200 (plus an additional $2,800 for research supplies and travel support) to support research work with one of 13 UArizona Beckman Mentors on a full-time basis for Summer 2022 and 2023, and on a part-time basis for the intervening 2022-2023 academic year. UArizona Beckman Scholars will work on a project of interest in their selected mentor's lab and engage in professional development activities, including leading undergraduates in small group discussions, inviting and hosting an eminent scientist to give a seminar at UArizona, meeting with Beckman Mentors, and serving as student leaders within the Undergraduate Biology Research Program.

Students eligible to apply for the UArizona Beckman Scholars Program must:

  • Be a University of Arizona full-time undergraduate student majoring in any biological or chemical science, intending to pursue an advanced science degree or other scientific pursuits.
  • Be a sophomore or junior at the time of application (Spring 2022), graduating in May 2023 or later.
  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or have DACA recipient status.
  • Be willing and able to devote Summer 2022 and 2023 (full-time) and the intervening 2022-2023 academic year (part-time) to working on a research project.
  • Be willing and able to participate in the Beckman Symposium, held in Irvine, CA, for both summers. If in-person, travel and hotel accommodations will be provided.
  • Be willing and able to serve as a summer workshop leader and peer facilitator for UBRP participants, and engage in the professional development activities associated with this program.

UArizona Beckman Scholar Application Process:
As part of the application process, students must choose one of the selected Scientific American articles to read and they must develop a creative three-page research proposal in response to the prompt. Applications are due to by 3:00 PM on Friday, February 25, 2022. A committee will review students’ application packets and evaluate the creativity/merit of their research proposals. The most highly qualified applicants will be invited for an interview with the selection committee in March/April 2022. At the interview, applicants will give a 10-minute presentation on their proposal to the selection committee. All applicants will be notified of their acceptance or rejection for the UArizona Beckman Scholars Program by April 8th, 2022.
