Nicole Duby is a UA alum and Fulbright grant winner— she earned a B.S. in psychology and a B.A. in French in 2021. Originally from Arizona, Duby spent her whole life here before moving to Clermont-Ferrand, France to work as an English language assistant. Nicole has most recently been working on manuscripts with the psychology faculty at University of Arizona, as well as preparing her course material before she departs to teach English overseas.

“I’m excited to continue motivating students! I'm in the process of planning for my language and culture club I am hoping to institute in Luxembourg,” remarked Duby.

As a part of her application process for the Fulbright Scholarship, Duby expressed her excitement to represent the U.S. in Luxembourg— specifically teaching about the rich culture of the Southwest. When Duby applied for the Fulbright Scholarship, she was unsure if her application would be chosen.

“I found out I was awarded the Fulbright grant in late March via email. After refreshing the page multiple times, I got the notification and immediately opened up the online portal. I nearly fell out of my chair once I read the results; I was so excited!” exclaimed Duby. Throughout the application process, Duby credits her family and friends for being her biggest motivators.

The Fulbright Scholarship is funded by the U.S. Department of State and serves abroad as a partnership with Fulbright Commissions and Foundations, along with U.S. embassies. Typically, Fulbright grant winners will receive enough funding to support a full academic year in one country. Fulbright applicants have the option to create their own study programs or research projects while abroad, or can participate in already established programs as English Teaching Assistant.

Starting this September, Duby will begin work as teaching assistant at the University of Luxembourg and Lycée Hubert Clément Esch-sur-Alzette. She is currently preparing for the beginning of her Fulbright grant by preparing her coursework to teach English and working with the Fulbright commission to plan her arrival in Luxembourg. Luxembourg is a country in Western Europe that borders Belgium, Germany and France, and has three national languages: French, German, and Luxembourgish. In her downtime abroad, Nicole hopes to learn German as well.

Another Perspective

“Nicole Duby is a focused and persistent person who has big goals for herself. She developed a keen interest in Luxembourg and its unique cultural make-up and that is partly why she decided to apply for an English Teaching Assistantship there. She built the skills and experiences needed to be an excellent classroom teacher there, and she sought out online support from others who had done the Fulbright ETA there previously. She will bring skill, joy and energy to her students, as well as a desire to continue being a learner herself.”
