In this course, we explore the notion of racial violence across the Americas, beyond the usual understanding of racial violence as in the case of police brutality (as targeted by Black Lives Matter activists in the U.S.). Race has been entangled in every major issue of politics, religion, gender, economics, and culture across the Americas for the past 500 years. Taking as a spring board the recent social and political changes in Brazil, where Brazilian blacks are coming up against instances of violence and discrimination, students should be able to critically analyze notions of race and racism in other American countries, paying attention to how race has been a determining factor when it comes to various forms of structural violence.
