In the 2021-22 academic year, the Honors College Big Ideas, Grand Challenges Series is focused on the future. Honors students are building skills and understanding that will be essential to solving problems and addressing challenges. As all of us – those within the university and those outside of it -- look ahead to what life looks like in the years and decades to come, what must we bear in mind? How does our thinking about the future shape our planning in the present?
- Why are there different responses to the pandemic at varying levels of governance/influence? Is it possible to reconcile those in the future to create a more unified approach to combating pandemics?
- How do we create an appropriate balance between addressing immediate health concerns and considering longer-term effects of restricting economic and cultural activity?
- What do we need to do in this country and beyond to address health disparities (across racial, gender and socioeconomic categories, in particular) that are amplified in the time of pandemic?
