Franke Honors Assistant Professor of Practice Nadia Alvarez Mexia, PhD., recently published an article in NAFSA's May/June 2023 Issue for Trends & Insights. In her article, Pedagogy for Short-Term Programming, Dr. Alvarez Mexia presents pedagogical insights for international education programs based on her experiences teaching at the University of Arizona. Her article also examines the transformation in the design of international academic offerings such as student mobility programs.

Dr. Alvarez Mexia has a unique pedagogy of her own, which often centers actionable and collaborative curriculum. In the Franke Honors College, Alvarez Mexia's courses focus on different pedagogical approaches, in which students interact directly with experts, create change in their communities, improve their communication, adaptability and collaboration skills. In fall 2023, Alvarez Mexia will be teaching a bilingual course HNRS 295G-001: Global Diversity & Voices, taught in both Spanish and English.

As a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI)-Honors, Franke Honors celebrates diverse identities through courses, student groups, events, and more. Bilingual HNRS courses allow Spanish speaking students to feel a little more at home in the classroom, while at the same time offering students who are newer to the language a chance to learn and grow in their knowledge. Last fall, HNRS 295G culminated in a student run seminar, La Distinción de la Diversidad, which was co-sponsored by the University’s HSI Initiatives. The seminar was attended by visiting students from Mexico and included presentations and dynamic activities for all.
