The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the major theoretical approaches in the study of international conflict and cooperation. Which factors motivate states to engage in military conflict with each other? Which factors constraint them from taking such action? We will attempt to answer these questions using major theoretical approaches such as realism, liberalism, balance of power, democratic peace, and diversionary war theory. The objective is to enable students to engage in analytical thinking by applying these frameworks to specific historical and current events.
