This seminar explores the intersections of politics, culture, and music over the long history of the Cold with an emphasis on the role of music performance, composition, criticism, and culture in the two super powers and their spheres of influence. This is a discussion-based course intended primarily for undergraduate non-music majors, and background knowledge in music is required to enroll in this course. The curriculum is designed to give students the knowledge and skills required to listen to music critically, discuss music, develop and explain musical preferences, and reflect on the historical, cultural, and social context of music. The assigned readings and course activities introduce key concepts in music fundamentals and music appreciation in the first two units of the semester, to prepare students to read recent scholarship from leading musicology journals in the second half of the semester.
