Kat Riesing

Assistant Professor of Practice

Katarina (Kat) Riesing is a visual artist working at the intersection of painting and the fiber arts Her work and research focuses on contemporary figuration and self-portraiture. Drawing on various references including abstraction, fashion, surrealism, horror films and humor; her meticulously rendered silk and embroidered paintings grapple with the complexities and contradictions housed in and on the body. Kat’s works have been exhibited nationally and internationally with recent shows in New York City and Mexico City. She has been the recipient of numerous artist-in-residency programs, including residencies in Iceland, Paris, Mexico City, and New York City. Kat is represented by Asya Geisberg Gallery in New York City and Bertrand Productions in Philadelphia. She holds her BA in Studio Art and Anthropology from Smith College and her MA and MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from the University of Wisconsin- Madison.

Prior to joining the W.A. Franke Honors faculty, Kat was a professor of painting and drawing and has led workshops in fiber-based practices. Classroom experiences are always student-centered, harnessing the interests and experiences of individual students to create dynamic and relevant works. As a member of the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation faculty, Kat is excited to bring a creative and maker-mentality to a transdisciplinary space.
