¡Pleibol! This class will discuss how the sport of baseball served as a laboratory for players, spectators, amateurs, professionals, and community members to forge identities as Mexican Americans by molding an American cultural activity to fit their own needs in conversation with prevailing historical attitudes towards people of Mexican descent in the United States. Students will examine ideas about race, gender, class, and citizenship through an interdisciplinary lens that brings together elements of history, ethnic studies, business and marketing, public policy, urban planning, agriculture, and popular media studies.
