18 UARIZONA STUDENTS AND ALUMNI SELECTED AS FULBRIGHT SEMIFINALISTS

The Fulbright Program was created to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The primary source of funding for the Fulbright Program is an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. 

Eighteen University of Arizona students have been named semifinalists for the Fulbright US Student program. Final selections are underway for the 2021-2022 applicant cohort and will be made on a rolling basis throughout the spring and vary depending on the country of application. 

The semifinalists represent seven UArizona colleges, including six who are current students or alumni of the Honors College. Their proposed research, study, and teaching projects span 14 countries and 5 continents: 

  • Lisa Woodson – Epidemiology DPH student, Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowship in Public Health, Peru 
  • Myrsini Manney-Kalogera – History PhD student, Fulbright Greece-Turkey Joint Research Award, Greece & Turkey 
  • Reed Battles – History PhD student, Garcia-Robles Study/Research Award, Mexico 
  • Mariana Manriquez – Sociology PhD student, Garcia-Robles Study/Research Award, Mexico 
  • Cody Sinks – Marketing Master’s student, English Teaching Assistantship, Ukraine 
  • Jacob Suitts – Latin American Studies Master’s student, Study/Research Award, Brazil 
  • Caitlin Redmond – Master of Public Health alumna, Study/Research Award, Namibia 
  • Mia Carvalho Guimaraes – Spanish and Portuguese undergraduate alumna, English Teaching Assistantship, Spain 
  • Maria Galloway-Sprietsma – Physics and Astronomy undergraduate, English Teaching Assistantship, Vietnam 
  • Alexandra Johnson – Anthropology and German Studies undergraduate, English Teaching Assistantship, Germany 
  • Margaret (Ales) Waskow – Biosystems Analytics and Technology undergraduate, Study/Research Award, Slovenia 
  • Ian Tisdale – Psychology, Global Studies, and Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law (PPEL) undergraduate, Study/Research, Guatemala 
  • Mari Cleven – Videographer, Study/Research, Brazil 
  • Esteban Camarena – Latin American Studies Master’s and Master of Public Administration alumnus, Study/Research, Brazil 
  • Patrick Franco – Spanish and Portuguese Master’s alumnus – IE Business School Master’s Award, Spain
